Sixteen-year-old Teagan Merritt, a Thurston High School student and standout athlete, is in critical condition after a violent crash on Nov. 15 in eastern Lane County. She was asleep in the back seat of a Ford Focus when her friend, Shyla Flores, legally stopped with her blinker on to turn into Teagan’s driveway. A full-size Dodge truck struck the car from behind, dragging it more than 200 feet into a creek. Flores was unharmed, and Teagan’s family believes her quick actions — flashing brake lights, honking, and pulling toward the shoulder — helped save Teagan’s life. Teagan suffered a traumatic brain injury and multiple other injuries and faces a long road to recovery. A decorated wrestler with state titles in both freestyle and Greco-Roman, as well as a competitive equestrian barrel racer, she is known for her spirit, work ethic, and bright personality.
